Shot this photo set this evening while Khun Chai was laying down on the floor without any body around as we have been spend a whole day watching him and all mahouts and vet are resting and look for other thing to help this elephant to become normal, but our dream was fading if this elephant could not get up and stand..
It has been over a month that Khun Chai shows that he is getting worse since swollen back legs and I saw the vet talked with the mahout of Khun Chai and I found out that Khun Chai has swollen and he did not move, he only stood at the same area for long time and they said he did want to lay down as he knew that he might not be able to get up. Then a couple day ago I found that Khun Chai laid down on the floor and try to get up while his mahout was away from the camp as day off. Khun Chai seemed that he misses his mahout every single of minute and yesterday this mahout came back to work and when Khun Chai first meet his mahout in the mahout, he is very happy and tried to get up and stay with him as this mahout always takes care of Khun Chai every day such as at 09:00 Am the mahout will cook boiled rice and mixed with calcium and give it to his beloved elephant and then he took his elephant for morning walk to the showground to meet other elephant.. On the way to the showground Khun Chai would meet the tourists who come to visit the camp early morning and many of them took the photo with Khun Chai and seem he was loving it..
In the past I did not want to add this sad story on the website as it would brought many people tears. Now I feel so sad to see that he is suffering from poor body.. I will update more photos of Khun Chai tomorrow...

I sat here reading about the baby being so sick and chocked up on my tears. If this is AI - that is the baby we saw when we took the mahout course 2 Septembers ago. Please keep us posted on his condition. I am praying for him to pull through.
Hi Supat - It looks like Khun Chai is leaking from the gland when a male elephant goes into Musk. Khun is too young to go into Musk. Why is he leaking on the side of his face???

Khun Chai does not look well. The photos and your comments have me chocking up with tears. He is a beautiful baby and I pray that he recovers well and become strong again. Please keep us posted on his condition.

That is from the water from giving him by the mahout.. Now it seems he is getting a little better. Let see him in long term.

I remember meeting Khun Chai at the camp. Supat explained that his back legs are bowed because he didn't get his mother's milk when he was a baby in the wild. I guess now that he is getting bigger his legs can't handle the weight. This is so sad. I hope he can recover from this!

Oh my god, this is truly heartbreaking. Ever since I saw the photos of his arrival, I prayed for his legs to improve. Subsequent photos appeared promising, so it is devastating to see this now.

Hey Emily, it's not AI. He's the baby that was confiscated from poachers. He was taken at a very young age, thereby robbing him of his mother's milk which most likely led to his bowed legs. Poor Khun Chai did not deserve this!(I don't even want to get started on how I feel about those poachers.)
I really REALLY hope that Khun Chai gets better. Having met this young elephant in January, I have a special place in my heart for this one (sorry Prachuab, don't get jealous)!
Seeing Kun Chai play tug of war with the vet on placement from the States, using his trunk as the rope was VERY funny! Bathtime was even funnier! This little elephant has a beautiful personality that I hope will pull him through.
